Priorities
Promote Responsible Growth
Balance Housing Needs & Protecting Our Environment
New Hanover County is at the center of one of the fastest growing metro areas in the United States. This incredible growth has been good for our community in many ways, but over the last five years Fair Market Rent has increased by over 50%, and over one third of New Hanover County residents are housing cost burdened.
I believe we can continue to grow–responsibly– while making meaningful progress on solving our county’s housing crisis. We need to remember that creating new housing isn’t just building walls and ceilings – we’re creating communities for residents who deserve access to the beauty of New Hanover County’s unique natural environment.
Once elected, I will:
-
Advocate for upzoning requests to undergo environmental impact assessments by the county’s new Sustainability Manager.
-
Consider existing infrastructure and the adequacy of community services when reviewing rezoning requests.
-
Recognize the untapped potential for sustainable development in the northern part of the county. Ensure developments in this area are strategically located near essential resources such as transportation, commercial services, and green spaces.
-
Collaborate with developers to reduce housing barriers and ensure that housing is accessible to all.
-
Support local organizations that are already playing a vital role in supporting our unhoused citizens.
-
Work to ensure the next iteration of New Hanover County’s Comprehensive Plan provides a framework and guiding principles to ensure that we address housing needs while protecting our environment.
Improve Public Transportation
Improve Public Transportation
We must improve New Hanover County’s public transportation infrastructure to benefit both our community's residents and our visitors. By expanding transportation options, we can alleviate traffic congestion, reduce pedestrian accidents, and provide safer alternatives for individuals enjoying our vibrant community.
Once elected, I will:
-
Call for increased representation from various stakeholders on the WAVE board, including those who rely on public transportation and representatives from major employers, to ensure that the needs of all residents are effectively addressed.
-
Advocate for the county to adopt a plan to increase bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure in the county, including connections to City of Wilmington bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
-
Improve communication and public relations efforts to enhance awareness and accessibility of our transportation services.
-
Foster regional public-private partnerships that will allow us to add to public transportation offerings in cost effective ways.
Support Public Education
Support Public Education
I recognize the limited jurisdiction of the Board of Commissioners over public education policy. Critical decisions affecting our childrens’ education rest with the School Board. At the same time I recognize that one of the wealthiest counties in the state should have a school system that reflects that status. That’s why I’m committed to scrutinizing budget allocations, and providing the funding necessary to provide a first class education for all our K through 12 students. We must also ensure our schools remain focused on providing a quality education and avoid the distraction of unrelated issues and debates.
Once elected, I will:
-
Advocate for state lawmakers to appropriately fund our public schools.
-
Proactively plan for capital improvements that meet the needs of our growing county.
-
Promote a strong working relationship between the New Hanover County School Board and Board of Commissioners.
Economic Growth & Workforce Development

Economic Growth & Workforce Development
As our county continues to evolve and to attract new industries, it’s essential that current residents enjoy first access to newly created jobs. By investing in local talent and empowering historically marginalized communities, we can grow a sustainable economy from within. Forward thinking companies are attracted by vibrant communities with excellent schools, ample green spaces, and reliable public transportation. If we focus on building that community, we can ensure prosperity for generations to come.
Once elected, I will:
-
Support organizations and educational options that address the workforce deficit in the skilled trades.
-
Advocate for incentives and programs that attract innovative, forward-looking industries.
-
Support necessary housing and community programs that will ensure that New Hanover County is a place where folks who work here can afford to live here.
